Viikunoita is the plural form of the Finnish word viikuna, meaning wasp. Wasps belong to the order Hymenoptera and the family Vespidae, a diverse group that includes over 5000 species worldwide. They are characterised by a slender, segmented body, two pairs of wings, and a narrow waist called the petiole that joins the abdomen to the thorax. Unlike bees, many wasp species lack dense body hair and are generally more aggressive when disturbed.

Wasps serve important ecological functions. They act as pollinators for a variety of flowering plants, particularly in Mediterranean and subtropical regions, although they are not as efficient as bees. More significant is their role as predators and scavengers. Striking predators of many insect pests, wasps help regulate populations of caterpillars, aphids, and other arthropods. Some species are also known to prey on birds and small mammals for their larvae, increasing their importance in controlling local ecosystems.

The social structure of wasps ranges from solitary to eusocial. Solitary species hunt for their own offspring, while eusocial species like the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) live in colonies with a caste system of queens, workers, and males. These colonies are often founded in underground cavities, abandoned beetle burrows, or man-made structures, and they build paper nests using chewed plant fibres.

Human perceptions of wasps vary. In many cultures they are feared for their painful stings and because they can swell rapidly, but they are also valued for their natural pest control services. Certain culinary traditions in Finland and other Nordic countries include the consumption of wasp larvae as a delicacy, harvesting them from abandoned nests during late spring and early summer.
