Vesekövek, also known as kidney stones or renal calculi, are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. These stones can vary in size, from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball, and can affect any part of the urinary tract, from the kidneys to the bladder.

The formation of kidney stones is often linked to a lack of sufficient fluids in the body. When urine becomes more concentrated, minerals have a greater chance of crystallizing and clumping together. Other contributing factors include diet, obesity, certain medical conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, and some medications.

Symptoms of kidney stones can range from severe pain in the back and side, below the ribs, to pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin. Other common signs include persistent dull ache in the side and back, pain that comes in waves and fluctuates in intensity, pain when urinating, pink, red, or brown urine, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, nausea, and vomiting. Small stones may pass out of the body on their own with minimal discomfort, while larger stones may require medical intervention.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, medical history, urine tests, blood tests, and imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasounds to locate the stones and assess their size and position. Treatment options depend on the size, type, and location of the stones, as well as the severity of symptoms. These can include drinking plenty of fluids to help pass small stones, pain medication, and medical procedures like lithotripsy (using sound waves to break up stones) or surgery for larger or obstructive stones. Prevention strategies focus on increasing fluid intake and making dietary adjustments based on the type of stone.
