varjoamisen
Varjoamisen is a Finnish term for the practice commonly translated as shadowing. The word derives from varjo ("shadow") and the gerund -amisen, forming a noun that denotes the act of shadowing. In language learning and related performance disciplines, varjoamisen denotes a method in which a learner listens to a model—usually a native speaker—and immediately imitates the spoken output, often during the same listening moment. Variants include immediate shadowing, where repetition occurs in real time, and delayed shadowing, where the learner repeats after a brief pause. The practice is often used with audio recordings, transcripts, or live input, and is commonly guided by instructors or software feedback.
Practitioners use varjoamisen to train listening comprehension, pronunciation, prosody, and speaking fluency. It can be integrated
Critics note that shadowing can be challenging for beginners and may be less effective without clear goals
