Vanlichtniveau is a term used in Dutch lighting design and building automation to denote the target ambient light level in an interior space. It functions as a design and control parameter that informs how much artificial illumination is required to achieve comfortable visibility while managing energy use. The phrase combines van (of/from) with lichtniveau (light level) and is sometimes used as shorthand for the setpoint illuminance in a room.

Its practical use includes specifying a target lux level on the working plane, depending on the tasks, room purpose, and daylight contribution. In offices, typical recommendations range from about 300 to 500 lux at the desk for task performance, with lower levels in corridors and similar areas; the exact vanlichtniveau is chosen based on user comfort and energy goals. In daylight-rich spaces, daylight harvesting systems adjust electric lighting to maintain the vanlichtniveau, using sensors and dimming controls.
