Valguslik is a term used in orthopedics to describe a specific type of deformity. It refers to the outward angulation of a bone or joint, typically the knee or the foot. In the case of genu valgum, commonly known as "knock knees," the knees angle inward and touch or nearly touch when the legs are straightened, while the ankles are spread apart. This is the opposite of varus alignment, where the knees angle outward.

Valgus deformity can be congenital, meaning present at birth, or it can develop over time due to various factors. These factors can include genetic predisposition, certain medical conditions such as rickets (a softening of bones due to vitamin D deficiency) or osteoarthritis, injury, or abnormal growth patterns in children. In children, mild valgus is common and often corrects itself as the child grows. However, if the condition is severe or persists, it can lead to pain, instability, and an increased risk of arthritis in the affected joint.

Diagnosis of valguslik typically involves a physical examination, where a doctor will assess the alignment of the legs and joints. Imaging studies, such as X-rays, may be used to evaluate the severity of the deformity and identify any underlying causes. Treatment options depend on the cause, severity, and the patient's age and symptoms. For mild cases, especially in children, observation and watchful waiting may be sufficient. For more significant deformities causing pain or functional limitations, non-surgical interventions like physical therapy, orthotics, or bracing might be recommended. In severe or persistent cases, surgical correction may be considered to realign the bones and improve joint function.
