It has no verified natural occurrence, and its properties are defined variably across textbooks and stories, serving as a flexible teaching and world-building tool.

Typical depictions describe underdelene as a layered silicate or sulfide with a crystal system that may be monoclinic or hexagonal. An idealized formula is given as (Al,Fe)3(SiO4)2(OH)2 with variable substitutions for Mg and Ti. The mineral is usually described as having a vitreous to pearly luster, a color range from dark gray to greenish-black, and a hardness around 4 to 5 on the Mohs scale. In many representations it shows good basal cleavage and a relatively high apparent density for a silicate.
