An ultraäänitransducer, or ultrasound transducer, is a device that converts electrical energy into high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) and vice versa. These transducers are fundamental components in ultrasound imaging systems, which are widely used in medical diagnostics, industrial inspections, and non-destructive testing.

Ultrasound transducers operate based on the piezoelectric effect, where certain materials generate an electrical charge when subjected to mechanical stress, and conversely, deform when an electrical voltage is applied. Common piezoelectric materials include lead zirconate titanate (PZT), quartz, and more recently, polymer-based ceramics like polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF).

In medical imaging, ultrasound transducers emit sound waves into the body, which reflect off internal structures such as organs, tissues, or fluids. The reflected waves, or echoes, are captured by the transducer and converted back into electrical signals, which are processed by a computer to create real-time visual images. Transducers come in various forms, including linear, curved, phased array, and endocavitary types, each suited for different applications such as abdominal, obstetric, or cardiac imaging.

Industrial and non-destructive testing applications use ultrasound transducers to detect flaws in materials, measure thickness, or inspect welds. These transducers emit high-frequency pulses that penetrate materials, and any discontinuities or boundaries scatter the waves, allowing for internal structure analysis.

The performance of an ultrasound transducer depends on factors such as frequency, bandwidth, sensitivity, and acoustic impedance matching. Higher frequencies provide better resolution but penetrate less deeply, while lower frequencies offer greater penetration at the expense of resolution. Transducers are often coupled with a gel or water to ensure efficient transmission of sound waves between the transducer and the medium being examined.

Modern advancements have led to the development of more efficient, compact, and versatile transducers, including those incorporating array technology for improved imaging quality and flexibility.
