Uhmakkuushäiriö, also known as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), is a behavioral disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures. The symptoms typically begin in childhood and can persist into adolescence and adulthood. To be diagnosed with ODD, the behavior must occur more frequently than is typical for a person of the same developmental level and must cause significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning.

The core features of ODD include angry and irritable moods, argumentative and defiant behavior, and vindictiveness. Individuals with ODD may frequently lose their temper, argue with adults, actively defy or refuse to comply with requests or rules, deliberately annoy others, and blame others for their mistakes or misbehavior. They may also be easily annoyed, resentful, and spiteful.

The exact causes of ODD are not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a complex interplay of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Factors such as temperament, brain chemistry, parenting styles, and family environment may contribute to its development. ODD is often comorbid with other mental health conditions, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders.

Treatment for ODD typically involves a combination of approaches, with parent management training being a primary intervention. This training helps parents develop effective strategies for managing their child's behavior. Other therapeutic interventions may include individual therapy for the child or adolescent, family therapy, and, in some cases, medication to address comorbid conditions. Early intervention and consistent support are crucial for improving outcomes.
