Tõlkeprogramme, also known as translation software or machine translation tools, are computer programs designed to translate text or speech from one language to another. These programs utilize various technologies, primarily natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI), to understand the source language and generate equivalent text in the target language.

The earliest forms of machine translation, developed in the mid-20th century, relied on rule-based approaches. These systems used predefined grammatical rules and dictionaries to perform translations. While they could handle some simple translations, they often produced awkward or inaccurate results, especially with complex sentences or idiomatic expressions.

More recent advancements have led to the dominance of statistical machine translation (SMT) and, more significantly, neural machine translation (NMT). SMT systems learn translation patterns from large parallel corpora (collections of texts and their translations). NMT, a subfield of deep learning, uses artificial neural networks to model the entire translation process, often achieving more fluent and contextually appropriate translations than previous methods.

They are used for a broad range of purposes, from translating personal emails and web pages to assisting professional translators and facilitating cross-cultural communication in business and diplomacy.
