In a typical configuration, a cooling fan pulls ambient air across the plate, removing heat generated by electronic components, welding equipment, or process machinery.

The operational principle relies on heat transfer by convection combined with the thermal conductivity of the plate material. As warm air passes over the fins, heat is carried away and dispersed, keeping the internal temperature within safe limits. Because no liquid medium is required, tuulettimilevyt are often preferred in environments where maintenance or coolant leaks pose risks, such as in food processing or chemical plants.

Common applications include cooling of PCBs in computer hardware, heat sinks for industrial compressors, and exhaust heat removal in automotive turbochargers. Disadvantages are their limited heat‑transfer capacity relative to liquid systems, especially under high thermal loads or when airflow is restricted.
