Tunnhårighet, also known as thinning hair, refers to a condition where hair gradually becomes less dense. It affects both men and women, although the patterns of thinning can differ.

The causes of tunnhårighet are varied and can include genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, stress, certain medical conditions, and the side effects of medications. Androgenetic alopecia, often referred to as male or female pattern baldness, is a common hereditary form of hair thinning. Other factors like telogen effluvium, a temporary shedding of hair, can be triggered by significant physical or emotional stress.

Diagnosing tunnhårighet typically involves a review of medical history, a physical examination of the scalp and hair, and sometimes blood tests to rule out underlying medical conditions. Treatment approaches depend on the cause and severity of the thinning.
