Tulostuspäillä, often translated as printheads, are essential components in many types of printers, particularly inkjet and some dot matrix printers. Their primary function is to transfer ink onto a substrate, typically paper, to create an image or text. The design and operation of a tulostuspää vary significantly depending on the printing technology.

In inkjet printers, tulostuspäillä contain an array of microscopic nozzles. When a document is printed, the printer's control system sends signals to the tulostuspää. This causes specific nozzles to eject tiny droplets of ink onto the paper. There are two main methods for ejecting ink: thermal bubble (bubble jet) and piezoelectric. In thermal bubble technology, a heating element rapidly heats a small portion of ink, creating a bubble that forces a droplet out of the nozzle. Piezoelectric technology uses a crystal that changes shape when an electric voltage is applied, pushing ink out of the nozzle.

Tulostuspäillä can be either integrated into the ink cartridge or be a permanent part of the printer. If integrated into the cartridge, the printhead is replaced each time a new cartridge is installed. If it's a permanent part of the printer, only the ink cartridges need to be replaced. The quality and resolution of printed output are directly influenced by the number of nozzles, their precision, and the control over ink droplet size. Over time, tulostuspäillä can become clogged with dried ink, requiring cleaning cycles or eventual replacement to maintain print quality.
