Applications of toxinology span clinical medicine, public health, and industry. In clinical toxicology, toxinologists contribute to diagnosis, treatment, and management of poisonings and overdoses. In venom research, they assist in antivenom development and improving treatments for envenomation. They also work on safety assessment for chemicals and drugs, environmental risk assessment, and forensic toxicology.

Career paths often require doctoral-level training in toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, or a related field, with clinicians sometimes pursuing medical toxicology subspecialization. Venomics and toxin-related research are active subfields, reflecting ongoing interest in understanding toxins for therapeutic and preventive purposes.
