Toimibõhkjahutusega is a term used to describe equipment that relies primarily on air cooling to remove heat. In standard Estonian usage, the same concept is written as toimib õhkjahutusega. The term covers both passive cooling through natural convection and active cooling using fans or blowers to move air over heat-dissipating surfaces.

Mechanism and components: Heat-generating components transfer heat to a heat sink with an increased surface area, often made of aluminum or copper. Air flows through or around the fins, removing heat to the surrounding environment. In active air cooling, forced convection is achieved with fans or ducting to improve airflow; in passive air cooling, heat is dissipated mainly through natural air movement. Design aims to maximize surface area, minimize thermal resistance, and maintain adequate airflow paths.

Advantages and limitations: Air cooling systems are generally inexpensive, simple, and reliable, with no risk of liquid coolant leaks and relatively easy maintenance. They are well suited for moderate power densities and common consumer electronics. Limitations include a capped cooling capacity compared to liquid cooling, reduced effectiveness at high ambient temperatures or restricted airflow, potential noise from fans, and possible dust accumulation that can degrade performance.

Applications and design considerations: Air cooling is widely used in desktop PCs, laptops, servers with air-cooled racks, and various power electronics. Important design considerations include the orientation of airflow, placement of intake and exhaust, filtration and dust management, case or enclosure design to avoid recirculation, and the geometry and material of heat sinks to balance cooling performance with noise. Maintenance typically focuses on cleaning dust and inspecting fans and seals.
