They typically have soft uppers made of textiles such as knit fabric, wool, or fleece, and may feature leather or suede accents. The sole is usually flexible and light, with options including fabric-covered, crepe rubber, or other non-slip materials. Some styles are closed at the back for better foot support, while others are open-back or mule-style for easy on and off.

Typical use is indoors, especially at home, but some versions are used in hotels, spa facilities, or light indoor-outdoor settings at home. They are commonly worn to keep feet warm, dry, and comfortable on hard floors, and to protect flooring from cold. Seasonal variations include wool and fleece for colder months and cotton or knit versions for warmer periods.

Care varies by material. Fabric and fleece slippers are often machine washable or can be spot-cleaned; wool variants may be hand-washed or dry-cleaned; leather and suede slippers require conditioning and careful cleaning. Most should be air-dried away from direct heat.
