Handwashed is an adjective describing items cleaned by manual agitation rather than by a washing machine. It is commonly used for textiles—garments, linens, and delicate fabrics such as wool, silk, lace, or cashmere—that require gentler handling than machine washing. It can also refer to care practices for certain household items and, less commonly, to food-safe cleaning methods when producers or retailers emphasize meticulous cleaning.

To hand wash, fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Submerge the item and gently agitate with the hands; avoid twisting or wringing. Soak briefly if needed, then rinse thoroughly with clean water until no detergent remains. Squeeze out excess water carefully by pressing, not twisting. Lay flat to dry or hang, depending on fabric and care label. For dyed materials, wash separately the first few times to prevent color transfer.

Care labeling and considerations: Many textiles carry hand wash or handwash symbols; always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Use cold water for heat-sensitive fibers; test colorfastness on inconspicuous areas; wear gloves if detergents irritate skin.

Advantages and limitations: Handwashing can protect delicate fibers from damage, shrinkage, and color fading, extending the garment’s life. It is time-consuming and may yield inconsistent results, and improper technique can still damage fabrics. In some cases, machine washing on a delicate cycle may be an acceptable alternative if permitted by the care label.
