They are widely used in Italy within universities, vocational schools, and public institutions, and are often described in English as internships or traineeships.

Two main forms are commonly recognized. Curricular tirocinio is integrated into degree programs or professional curricula to complement theoretical study with hands-on experience. Extracurricular tirocinio, undertaken outside formal coursework, is typically used by graduates or students to gain additional work experience, sometimes to satisfy licensing prerequisites or to improve employability. In some contexts, a tirocinio plan is agreed between the participant, the host organization, and the educational institution.

Implementation usually involves a learning plan with defined objectives, supervision by a tutor or mentor, and a formal agreement detailing roles, duration, and evaluation criteria. The length of tirocini varies from a few weeks to several months, with maximum durations often governed by national or regional rules. Remuneration differs by program and region: some tirocini are paid with stipends or allowances, while others are unpaid.

Purpose and outcomes center on skill development, workplace exposure, and improved prospects for employment. While many tirocini facilitate entry into the job market, they do not guarantee a job offer at completion.

Regulatory frameworks at national and regional levels aim to ensure proper supervision, safe working conditions, clearly defined learning goals, and fair treatment of participants, while preventing exploitation as inexpensive labor.
