A throatstrap is a strap that encircles or passes under the throat to secure a piece of equipment to the head or neck. The term is used in several disciplines, but it is most commonly associated with equestrian gear, where it is often referred to as the throatlatch on a bridle or halter.

In horse tack, the throatstrap is attached to the headstall and runs beneath the horse’s throat, fastening behind the jaw or at the throat area. Its primary purpose is to prevent the headgear from sliding forward and coming off the ears during movement. It is typically adjustable with a buckle or clasp and may be removable in some bridle designs. Some bridles omit a throatstrap for a cleaner profile, relying on other restraints such as the noseband or crownpiece for security, while others include a safety throatstrap for additional security, especially with young or vigorous horses.

Outside of equestrian use, throatstraps can appear in various headwear, harnesses, or safety equipment where a strap around the neck helps anchor or stabilize the device. The common thread across applications is that the strap should fit securely without constricting breathing or causing discomfort. Proper adjustment is important to balance security with comfort and to avoid chafing or restricted movement.
