Constricting is the act of making something narrower by binding, pressing, squeezing, or tensing. It can be physical, chemical, or physiological, and appears across biology, medicine, engineering, and everyday life.

In physiology, constriction often refers to narrowing of a tube or vessel. Vasoconstriction is the narrowing of blood vessels mediated by smooth muscle in the vessel walls, driven by sympathetic nerves and hormones such as norepinephrine; it raises systemic vascular resistance and can redirect blood flow. Bronchoconstriction reduces the diameter of airways in the lungs and can occur in asthma or allergic reactions. Constriction also involves the closing of stomata in plants to reduce water loss, controlled by guard cells.

In medicine and pathology, constrictive processes can be acute or chronic. Tourniquets or constrictive bands apply external pressure to control bleeding or to immobilize an area, but prolonged constriction risks tissue injury. Constrictive pericarditis is a disorder in which a thickened pericardium restricts diastolic filling of the heart.

In everyday use, constricting can describe clothing or devices that tighten around the body, such as belts or corsets, or mechanical clamps that bind components together.

The term shares a common root with constrict, from Latin con-stringere “to bind tight.” In analysis, constriction is discussed for its role in regulating flow, pressure, and volume, as well as its potential to cause tissue damage if excessive or prolonged.
