Threadbased is a term used in software engineering to describe a concurrency model that emphasizes the use of operating system threads as the primary unit of execution. In threadbased systems, concurrent tasks are mapped to threads, which may be scheduled by the OS or managed through a thread pool. This contrasts with event-driven or asynchronous models where a small number of threads handle many tasks via non-blocking I/O and callbacks.

Core concepts include thread creation and lifecycle, synchronization primitives (locks, mutexes, semaphores, condition variables), and memory visibility rules. Thread pools are commonly used to amortize thread creation overhead and control resource usage. Tasks can be CPU-bound, benefiting from real parallel execution on multi-core CPUs, or I/O-bound with blocking operations where dedicated threads can improve responsiveness.

Advantages of threadbased concurrency include intuitive programming for certain problems, direct access to thread-local storage, and predictable behavior on multi-core hardware. Limitations involve higher memory overhead, complexity of synchronization, potential for race conditions and deadlocks, and diminishing returns as the number of threads grows. In some ecosystems, language features or runtimes (such as a global interpreter lock) can limit true parallelism for CPU-bound workloads, guiding developers toward alternative models or process-based parallelism.

Common implementation patterns include thread pools, work queues, futures or promises, and careful use of locks to minimize contention. Key design tradeoffs center on task granularity, synchronization overhead, and the balance between parallelism and coordination overhead.
