In practice, a clinician creates a test order in the patient’s record, specifying the tests, clinical indication, urgency, sampling requirements, and timing. The order is transmitted to the appropriate department—such as a laboratory or radiology—where personnel prepare and perform the test and report results back to the clinician. Modern systems use electronic health records and computerized physician order entry to reduce errors and improve throughput. Orders may include specimen type, collection instructions, and contingency notes. Results are linked to the patient record and interpreted by the ordering clinician, sometimes with decision support tools.

Coding and standards: test orders use standardized identifiers, such as LOINC for the test and panels, and SNOMED CT for the clinical terms; in some regions, additional codes for reimbursement or regulatory purposes apply.

Governance and safety: effective testbestilling relies on appropriate test selection, avoidance of duplications, preauthorization when required, and clinical decision support to reduce unnecessary testing and ensure patient safety.
