Tensionshuvudvärk, also known as tension-type headache (TTH), is the most common form of primary headache. It is characterized by a dull, aching head pain. The pain is often described as a band or vice-like pressure around the head, and can affect both sides of the head. It is typically mild to moderate in intensity and does not usually worsen with routine physical activity. Tensionshuvudvärk is generally not associated with nausea or vomiting, although some individuals may experience mild sensitivity to light or sound.

The exact cause of tensionshuvudvärk is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to muscle contractions in the head and neck, as well as changes in brain chemicals. Stress, anxiety, fatigue, poor posture, and jaw clenching are common triggers. It can occur episodically, meaning it happens occasionally, or chronically, meaning it occurs frequently, often daily or almost daily.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a person's description of their headache symptoms. There is no specific diagnostic test for tensionshuvudvärk. Treatment typically involves over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. For chronic TTH, preventive medications may be prescribed. Lifestyle modifications, including stress management techniques, regular exercise, and improved sleep hygiene, can also be beneficial in reducing the frequency and severity of headaches.
