In professional competition, men’s matches are often best of five sets, while women’s matches are typically best of three.

Tennis is played on several surfaces, including grass, clay, and hard courts, each affecting ball speed and bounce and influencing playing style. Equipment consists of a racquet, strings, balls, and appropriate footwear.
