Tengerészek is the Hungarian term for sailors or mariners. Tengerészek are people who operate ships and boats at sea or on inland waters, performing duties related to navigation, ship handling, cargo operations, maintenance, and safety. Their work covers a wide range of vessels, including merchant ships, fishing boats, passenger ships, and naval vessels, and it can involve international voyages as well as inland-waterway transport on rivers such as the Danube.

Training and qualifications: Seafaring is regulated by national authorities and international agreements. In general, aspiring tengerészek must complete approved maritime education and obtain certifications for their rank and role, with standards defined under the STCW Convention (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers). Training typically covers safety at sea, survival craft and rescue, firefighting, first aid, navigation, and engine duties, plus language skills and medical fitness. Many countries have dedicated maritime academies or schools, and progression often requires on-board service and further exams to advance from rating to able seaman, officer, or engineer.

Working life and conditions: Seafarers typically work in shifts (watch systems) and can spend months at sea away from home. Onboard life involves living in close quarters, complying with safety protocols, maintaining equipment, loading and discharging cargo, and routing and navigation under the supervision of officers. Hazards include rough weather, long hours, and the risk of accidents; remuneration and contracts vary by vessel type, rank, and employer, with unions and international labor standards guiding minimum rights and rest periods.

National context: Hungary is landlocked, so most Hungarian tengerészek work on international merchant ships or on inland waterways such as the Danube. The profession remains central to global trade and naval services, supported by international organizations and national maritime authorities.
