A telegrafista, or telegraphist, was a professional trained to operate telegraph equipment for transmitting and receiving messages. These messages were typically sent using Morse code, a system of dots and dashes representing letters and numbers. Telegrafistas were crucial in the early days of telecommunications, enabling rapid long-distance communication.

Their role involved listening to or observing the incoming signals and transcribing them into legible text. Conversely, they would tap out messages using a telegraph key, converting written words into the coded signals. This required a high degree of skill, accuracy, and often speed. Telegrafistas worked in telegraph offices, train stations, ships, and military outposts, connecting individuals and organizations across vast distances.

The profession emerged with the invention and widespread adoption of the electric telegraph in the mid-19th century. As technology advanced, the demand for telegrafistas grew, making them essential for commerce, journalism, and governance. The development of more automated telegraphic systems and later, the advent of the telephone and other electronic communication methods, gradually led to a decline in the need for traditional telegrafistas. However, the skills and knowledge associated with telegraphy remain a part of telecommunications history.
