Tannsensitivitet, also known as dentin hypersensitivity, is a common condition characterized by sharp, sudden pain in the teeth. This pain typically occurs in response to stimuli such as hot or cold temperatures, sweet or acidic foods and drinks, or even touch, like brushing. The sensation is usually brief but can be intense.

The underlying cause of tannsensitivitet is the exposure of dentin, the layer beneath the enamel and cementum that covers the tooth. Dentin contains microscopic tubules that lead to the tooth's nerve. When dentin is exposed, these tubules can be stimulated by external factors, sending pain signals to the brain.

Common reasons for dentin exposure include gum recession, which pulls the gums away from the teeth, leaving the root surfaces unprotected. Enamel erosion, caused by acidic foods and drinks or aggressive brushing, can also wear away the protective outer layer. Additionally, cracked or chipped teeth, or dental work such as fillings that have become worn or leaked, can expose the sensitive dentin.

Managing tannsensitivitet often involves identifying and addressing the cause. Dentists may recommend using desensitizing toothpastes, which contain compounds that block the transmission of sensation from the tooth's surface to the nerve. In-office treatments, such as fluoride varnishes or bonding agents applied to the exposed areas, can also provide relief. Maintaining good oral hygiene with a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoiding acidic foods and drinks are crucial for prevention and management.
