A tandemkajak is a two-person kayak designed for paddling by two occupants simultaneously. It normally has two seating positions, fore and aft, with one paddle per paddler, and can be either sit-in or sit-on-top. Some models offer two separate cockpits, while others provide a single cockpit with two seats.

Size and performance: Tandems are longer and wider than solo boats, typically about 3.4–4.9 meters (11–16 feet) long. The extra length improves carrying capacity and tracking but can reduce agility in tight spaces. Most have a weight capacity around 180–340 kilograms (400–750 pounds), depending on design and gear.

Paddling and coordination: Successful tandem paddling relies on coordination between paddlers. The front paddler generally sets the pace, while the rear paddler can influence steering, especially when a rudder or skeg is fitted. Inexperienced crews may experience yaw or instability if strokes are not synchronized.

Uses and variants: Tandems are common for recreational lakes, calm rivers, family outings, and short touring trips. They are popular for beginners and for those who want to share paddling duties. Fishing-oriented tandems exist with additional gear capacity.

Materials and construction: Mass-produced tandems are typically rotomolded polyethylene for durability and low cost. Higher-end models use fiberglass or composite materials. Sit-on-top tandems are widespread in warm climates and are easier for entry and exit.

Safety and maintenance: Always wear a life jacket and observe weight and capacity limits. Check weather, currents and visibility; balance the weight distribution between seats; rinse and dry after use and store away from direct sunlight.
