In medicine, a tamponade is a condition where pressure is exerted on a body part, often the heart or blood vessels, by a collection of fluid or blood. The most commonly discussed type is cardiac tamponade, a life-threatening condition where excess fluid accumulates in the pericardial sac, the membrane surrounding the heart. This fluid buildup compresses the heart, preventing it from filling properly with blood and thus impairing its ability to pump blood to the rest of the body.
