In many species, the tail is a primary signal whose meaning depends on context and other body language. Observers should consider tail position, movement, speed, and how it interacts with the rest of the body and the situation.

Dogs use tail signals to express emotion and intent. A high, stiff tail can indicate alertness or potential dominance, a neutral or relaxed tail suggests calmness, and a tucked tail signals fear or submission. Wagging is common, but its meaning varies with pace and duration and is not a universal indicator of friendliness.

Cats show tail cues that reflect their internal state as well. A tail held high can signal confidence or curiosity, while a slowly lashing or twitching tail often denotes irritation or agitation. A puffed or plume-like tail indicates fear or defensive posturing, and a tail wrapped around the body may reflect relaxation or self-soothing.

Horses use tail carriage and movement to express arousal, discomfort, or irritation. A swishing tail frequently serves to deter flies but can also reflect agitation. A clamped or tucked tail can indicate fear, pain, or withdrawal from the environment.
