Sår bettning, commonly translated as "wound bed preparation" in English, is a fundamental concept in wound care. It refers to the systematic management of the wound environment to facilitate healing. The goal of sår bettning is to address all factors that impede the natural healing process, creating an optimal condition for tissue regeneration. This approach encompasses several key components.

First is debridement, the removal of non-viable tissue such as slough, eschar, and necrotic tissue, as well as foreign bodies and debris. This is crucial because dead tissue can harbor bacteria, impede cell migration, and delay healing. Various debridement methods exist, including surgical, mechanical, enzymatic, autolytic, and biological.

Second is managing infection or bioburden. Wounds, especially chronic ones, are prone to bacterial colonization or infection. Identifying and treating any microbial presence is vital to prevent further tissue damage and allow the wound to heal.

Third is addressing exudate management. Excessive wound fluid can macerate surrounding healthy skin and impede healing, while insufficient exudate can lead to dryness and hinder cell movement. Appropriate dressings are selected to absorb or retain moisture as needed.

Fourth is balancing the moisture level within the wound. A moist wound environment is generally considered optimal for healing, as it promotes cell migration and reduces the risk of dehydration and eschar formation.

Finally, sår bettning involves managing the edges of the wound and addressing any undermining or tunneling. By systematically addressing these elements, healthcare professionals aim to transform a non-healing wound into one that is progressing towards closure.
