Szószedet is a list of words, often accompanied by brief explanations, translations, or grammatical information. A szószedet is used as a language-learning aid, as a lexicographic tool, or as a reference appendix in a text. It can be compiled for general vocabulary, for a specific domain, or for the vocabulary of a particular author or work.

In education, szószedetek help learners focus on essential vocabulary, introduce collocations, and provide example sentences. In publishing and lexicography, they support readers and translators by supplying sense distinctions, synonyms, or clarifications. In corpus linguistics, frequency-based szószedetek reveal common words and their usage patterns.

Common types include general-language szószedetek (basic vocabulary), specialized or technical glossaries (for medicine, law, etc.), thematic or topic-based lists (food, travel), bilingual glossaries, and monolingual vocabulary lists. A typical szószedet lists headwords (lemmas) and may add part of speech, pronunciation, meanings, translations, and usage notes or examples. Some szószedetek also map inflection patterns or common collocations.

Creation methods vary: compiled from corpora or texts, prepared manually by linguists or teachers, or generated by software. In print editions, a szószedet may accompany a work to aid comprehension; digital versions can be searchable and linked to definitions.
