Szívizomgyulladás, or myocarditis in English, is an inflammation of the heart muscle, the myocardium. This condition can affect people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. The most common cause of myocarditis is viral infection, such as enteroviruses, adenoviruses, and even the influenza virus. However, other factors can also trigger inflammation, including certain medications, autoimmune diseases like lupus, and exposure to toxins.

The symptoms of szívizomgyulladás can vary widely, from mild to severe. Some individuals may experience no symptoms at all, while others might present with chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, and even fainting. In more serious cases, myocarditis can lead to heart failure or arrhythmias, which are irregular heartbeats. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent long-term complications.

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests to detect markers of inflammation and cardiac damage, and often an echocardiogram to assess heart function.
