Syväpainatustekniikat, commonly known in English as gravure printing, are a group of intaglio printing methods where the image is created by incised or etched areas on a printing plate. In syväpainatus, the image is transferred from a recessed or sunken area on the plate to the substrate. This recessed area is filled with ink, and the excess ink is wiped from the non-image areas of the plate before the substrate is pressed against it. The ink from the sunken areas is then transferred to the substrate.

The depth and shape of these recessed cells determine the amount of ink they hold and thus the density of the color on the printed image. This allows for a wide tonal range and fine detail, making syväpainatus suitable for high-quality printing of images and text. Common applications include printing magazines, catalogs, packaging, wallpaper, and decorative laminates. The printing plates are typically made of metal, often copper, which is etched or engraved to create the image cells.

There are several variations of syväpainatus. Cylindrical engraving is a common method where a copper cylinder is engraved directly or electrochemically. Laser engraving is another modern technique that uses lasers to create the image cells on the cylinder. In chemical etching, a resist is applied to the plate, and then an acid etches away the exposed metal to form the recessed areas. The process requires specialized equipment and is generally more expensive than other printing methods, but it offers excellent print quality and durability.
