Syväpainatustekniikat, commonly known in English as gravure printing, are a group of intaglio printing methods where the image is created by incised or etched areas on a printing plate. In syväpainatus, the image is transferred from a recessed or sunken area on the plate to the substrate. This recessed area is filled with ink, and the excess ink is wiped from the non-image areas of the plate before the substrate is pressed against it. The ink from the sunken areas is then transferred to the substrate.
