Key features include treating the system as an interconnected whole rather than optimizing individual parts; attention to interfaces, data flows, governance and lifecycle; involvement of multiple disciplines and stakeholders; and iterative refinement through assessment and feedback.

Common methodologies encompass systems thinking, systems engineering, requirements engineering, enterprise architecture, and modeling and simulation. Work typically proceeds from problem framing and stakeholder analysis to defining requirements, designing architectures, integrating subsystems, validating through testing, deployment, and ongoing operation and optimization.

Applications span information technology, industrial automation, urban planning, transportation, healthcare, and energy systems. Examples: a unified transport or city information system that integrates ticketing, timetables and communications; a smart building that combines HVAC, energy management and security; or an enterprise platform that merges data, processes and services across departments.
