System attribute, or systemattribut (in German usage), refers to a property of an object that is maintained automatically by a computing system rather than supplied directly by users. These attributes describe metadata about the object, the system’s state, or constraints used to manage data and behavior.

Typical examples include a unique identifier, creation and modification timestamps, version numbers, and status flags (such as active or deleted). Additional system attributes may specify ownership, access controls, expiry dates, or audit information. System attributes are usually distinct from user-defined attributes in that they are implemented and maintained by the system and are often restricted from direct user editing.

System attributes play several roles. They support data integrity by providing stable keys and consistent timestamps; they enable auditing and accountability through traceable change history; and they improve performance and manageability by enabling efficient indexing and state tracking. In many domains, system attributes help enforce business rules and security policies without relying on user input for core identifiers.

In practice, different domains use system attributes in varied forms. In relational databases, common system attributes include id, created_at, updated_at, and version. In software frameworks and APIs, object-relational mappers automatically manage these attributes. In file systems, system attributes may include flags that the operating system uses to control access, visibility, or preservation of files.

Design considerations for system attributes include deciding which properties are system-controlled, ensuring immutability where appropriate, maintaining consistent updates across operations, and documenting their semantics and access policies for developers and operators.
