The term "symplastinen" is the Finnish adjective meaning "symplastic." It refers to the symplast, a concept in plant physiology that describes the continuous network of cytoplasm within a plant. This network is formed by adjacent cells being connected through plasmodesmata, small channels that allow direct cytoplasmic continuity.

In symplastic transport, molecules move through this interconnected cytoplasm without crossing a cell membrane. This contrasts with the apoplastic pathway, where substances move through the cell wall matrix and intercellular spaces. Symplastic movement is therefore highly selective: only molecules that can diffuse freely inside the cytoplasm can travel this route, and their movement may be regulated by cytoplasmic proteins and the size of plasmodesmal pores.

The symplast plays a crucial role in the distribution of water and nutrients, especially sugars produced by photosynthesis. Phloem loading often involves a symplastic pathway wherein sugars are transported from mesophyll cells into companion cells and then into sieve elements. In many cases, the symplastic route is energetically favorable because it bypasses active transport mechanisms that would otherwise require ATP.

Research on symplasmic connectivity has highlighted its importance in signal transduction, development, and stress responses. Changes in plasmodesmatal permeability can influence the timing of developmental processes such as leaf maturation or seed germination.
