Switch access is an input method that enables users with limited motor control to interact with digital devices using one or more switches to perform selections and actions. It is a form of assistive technology and is commonly used to access computers, tablets, and communication devices, often in educational and clinical settings.

How switch access works varies, but most implementations use a scanning interface. The screen highlights items in a sequence, and a user activates a switch when the desired item is highlighted to make a selection. Direct selection is possible in some configurations, where a user can navigate directly to a control and activate it. Configurable options typically include the scan pattern (automatic or manual), dwell time for activation, how items are organized (grid or row/column), and the number and type of switches in use.

Input devices and users: Switches can be physical buttons, sip-and-puff devices, joystick-based switches, or other switch-like interfaces. A single switch is common, though multi-switch setups are used to access more complex functions. Switch access supports general computer use, literacy and communication applications, and control of tablets and other mobile devices.

Implementation and platforms: Many operating systems provide switch access features. On Android, Switch Access is a built-in accessibility option; other platforms offer similar capabilities under different names, such as Switch Control on iOS, and related scanning interfaces in desktop environments.

Limitations and considerations: Effectiveness depends on interface design and user training. Some applications and websites may not expose accessible controls, which can hinder performance. Users may require customization and practice to achieve efficient navigation.
