Its primary function is to absorb shocks and vibrations from uneven road surfaces, ensuring a comfortable ride for occupants and maintaining tire contact with the ground for optimal handling and braking.

The main components of a typical suspension system include springs, shock absorbers (also called dampers), and various linkages and arms. Springs, such as coil springs, leaf springs, or torsion bars, absorb the initial impact of bumps. Shock absorbers then dissipate the energy stored in the springs, preventing excessive bouncing and oscillations. In an independent suspension, each wheel can move up and down without directly affecting the other wheels on the same axle. This generally leads to better ride quality and handling.
