Suncooking, also known as solar cooking, is a method of preparing food using sunlight. Solar ovens and cookers are designed to capture and concentrate solar radiation, converting it into heat that can cook food. These devices typically consist of an insulated box with a transparent lid, and often incorporate reflective surfaces to direct more sunlight into the cooking area.

The principle behind suncooking relies on the greenhouse effect. Sunlight passes through the transparent lid and is absorbed by the dark interior of the oven, heating it up. The insulation helps to retain this heat, allowing the temperature inside to rise to levels suitable for cooking. Reflectors, often made of aluminum foil or other shiny materials, are angled to bounce additional sunlight onto the cooking pot or the inside of the oven.

Suncooking is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional cooking methods, as it utilizes a renewable energy source and produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation. It can be particularly useful in areas with abundant sunshine and limited access to electricity or fuel. However, the cooking time can vary significantly depending on the intensity of the sunlight, the type of solar cooker used, and the ambient temperature. Cloudy weather or insufficient sunlight will prevent or significantly slow down the cooking process.
