Studeren is the Dutch verb that denotes the act of acquiring knowledge or skills through systematic learning, typically in an educational institution such as a secondary school, university, or vocational training centre. The term originates from the Latin “studēre”, meaning to be eager or diligent, and entered the Dutch language via French (studier) before stabilising in its current form.

In contemporary usage, studeren can refer both to the formal enrollment in a programme of study and to the broader, informal process of self‑directed learning. It is commonly conjugated in the present simple (ik studeer, jij studeert), past simple (ik studeerde) and perfect forms (ik heb gestudeerd). The noun derived from it, “studie”, denotes the specific field of study or the period of academic engagement.

Studeren is often distinguished from “leren”, which has a more general meaning of learning and can apply to informal contexts. While learning may occur spontaneously, studeren typically implies a structured curriculum, assessment, and the pursuit of a qualification such as a diploma, bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree.
