Stressihäired, or stress disorders, is a broad term encompassing a range of mental health conditions that arise in response to significant stress or trauma. These disorders can manifest in various ways, affecting an individual's emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being. The common thread among stress disorders is their origin in the body's response to overwhelming or threatening situations.

One of the most well-known stress disorders is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD can develop after a person experiences or witnesses a traumatic event, such as combat, natural disasters, or severe accidents. Symptoms of PTSD often include intrusive memories, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, negative alterations in cognitions and mood, and marked changes in arousal and reactivity. These symptoms can significantly impair daily functioning.

Another category within stress disorders includes acute stress disorder (ASD) and adjustment disorders. ASD shares many similarities with PTSD but occurs within a month of the traumatic event and lasts for a shorter duration. Adjustment disorders are characterized by emotional or behavioral symptoms that arise in response to an identifiable stressor, but the stressor is not necessarily life-threatening. These disorders can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, or behavioral disturbances.

The development of stress disorders is complex, involving a combination of genetic predisposition, psychological factors, and the severity and nature of the stressor. Effective treatment often involves psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), along with, in some cases, medication. Early intervention and support are crucial for managing symptoms and promoting recovery from stress-related conditions.
