A stowaway is a person who secretly boards a vehicle to travel without paying or obtaining permission. Stowaways evade official checks by concealing themselves in hidden spaces such as cargo holds, shipping containers, wheel wells, or other parts of a vessel or vehicle. While stowaway incidents have occurred in many forms of transport, maritime stowaways are the best documented in historical records, though road, rail, and air stowaways continue to be reported.

Stowaway activity is dangerous and illegal in many jurisdictions. If discovered, individuals may be detained, charged, or deported; carriers can face penalties and passengers or crew may be put at risk. In migration contexts, authorities may initiate asylum or immigration procedures. The act itself can carry criminal consequences beyond the underlying motive.

Motivations for stowing vary and can include economic hardship, the desire to migrate or seek asylum, or attempts to evade border controls. Stowaways can be of any age, with migration- and poverty-related cases often drawing public attention; some instances involve additional criminal activity such as trespass or theft.

Ships, trains, and especially aircraft employ restricted access to compartments, surveillance, and routine inspections; cargo screening, passenger checks, and security personnel help deter and detect hidden travelers. Nevertheless, stowaway incidents continue to occur in different contexts, reflecting ongoing tensions between access to travel and safety, security, and legal boundaries. The term may occasionally be used in reference to animals that conceal themselves to travel, though this usage is less common.
