A stereo system, or stereosystem, is an audio playback setup that reproduces sound through multiple channels to create a stereo image. It typically includes a source, processing, amplification, and loudspeakers.

Components include a source (vinyl turntable, CD player, streaming device, radio), a preamplifier or receiver, a power amplifier, and loudspeakers. Many modern systems use an integrated amplifier or receiver that combines preamp and power amp in one chassis. Additional components may include a digital-to-analog converter (DAC), an equalizer, a subwoofer, and various cables.

Configurations vary: two-channel stereo with two main speakers is common; 2.1 or higher adds subwoofers; speakers can be bookshelf or floorstanding; compact micro systems exist; home and car stereos are both common formats. Wireless and networked features are increasingly common.

Sources and formats: analog (vinyl, tape) and digital (CD, streaming, downloads). Many receivers include built-in DACs and decoding for formats like MP3, FLAC, AAC; modern systems may support Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Chromecast.

Design considerations: placement, room acoustics, and speaker efficiency influence imaging and tonal balance. Quality is judged by stereo imaging, frequency response, distortion, and noise.

History: The term stereo arose from two-channel recording in the mid-20th century, fueling the hi-fi movement. Technological advances in transistors, integrated circuits, and digital playback have shaped contemporary stereosystems.
