Chromecast

Chromecast is a line of streaming devices developed by Google. The devices plug into an HDMI port on a television and allow users to play video, audio, and other media by sending content from a smartphone, tablet, or computer to the TV via the Google Cast protocol. Unlike traditional set-top boxes, older Chromecast hardware does not run its own apps or provide a full user interface; instead, it receives commands from a controlling device.

Operation is centered on a compatible app or the Chrome browser on a mobile device or computer. The control device either streams content directly to the Chromecast if the app supports it, or sends a stream URL to the Chromecast to fetch from the internet. The TV then displays playback. All casting relies on a home Wi‑Fi network, and higher-end models that support 4K HDR may require a fast network and, for improved reliability, a wired Ethernet connection via an optional adapter.

Models in the Chromecast family have evolved over time. The lineup has included the original Chromecast, later generations with improved wireless performance, a version called Chromecast Ultra that adds 4K and HDR support, and a later Chromecast with Google TV that runs a built-in television operating system, offering a remote and a storefront for apps in addition to casting capabilities.

Usage and app support: The Chromecast ecosystem supports many apps and services, including YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, and others. It works with Android, iOS, and Chrome on desktop, and setup is typically performed through the Google Home app. Google Cast is designed to be platform-agnostic, enabling content casting across devices and ecosystems.
