Steganografia is the practice of concealing messages or information within other data in a way that is not immediately apparent. Unlike cryptography, which focuses on securing data through encryption, steganography aims to hide the very presence of a secret message. The term originates from the Greek words *steganos* (meaning "covered" or "concealed") and *graphia* (meaning "writing").

The technique has been used throughout history, from ancient times to modern digital communication. In classical antiquity, Greek soldiers would shave the head of a messenger and write a secret message on their scalp, allowing the hair to grow back over it once the message was delivered. In the Renaissance, invisible ink made from lemon juice or milk was used to write messages that became visible only when heated. Modern steganography often involves embedding data within digital files such as images, audio, or video, where the hidden message remains undetectable to casual observation.

Common methods include least significant bit (LSB) embedding, where the least significant bits of pixel values in an image are altered to store data, and digital watermarking, which inserts a hidden pattern into multimedia files. Steganography can also be applied to text files, network traffic, or even physical objects like microdots or invisible dyes. The effectiveness of steganography depends on the method used, the capacity of the carrier file, and the ability to detect or extract the hidden data without raising suspicion.

While steganography has legitimate applications in privacy preservation, secure communication, and digital forensics, it is also frequently associated with malicious activities such as cyber espionage, copyright infringement, or the distribution of illegal content. Due to its dual-use nature, governments and organizations regulate its use, and advanced detection tools are employed to uncover hidden messages in digital media. Ethical considerations and legal implications often surround its application, making it a subject of ongoing debate in cybersecurity and law enforcement.
