Watermarking is the process of embedding information into digital content in a way that is robust to manipulation while ideally preserving the content’s quality. It serves to assert ownership, authenticate the work, or track distribution. Watermarks can be visible, such as a logo or text overlaid on an image or video, or invisible, where the embedded data is not perceptible to human senses but can be detected or extracted later.

Techniques for watermarking are typically categorized by the domain in which the embedding occurs. In the spatial domain, watermark data is embedded by directly modifying pixel values or audio samples. In the transform or frequency domain, techniques operate on transformed coefficients (for example, Discrete Cosine Transform, Discrete Wavelet Transform, or Singular Value Decomposition) to achieve greater robustness against common processing operations like compression, filtering, or resizing.

Extraction of a watermark can be blind (requiring no reference to the original content) or non-blind (requiring the original content). Watermarks are described by properties such as imperceptibility, robustness, and capacity. Imperceptibility measures how the watermark affects perceived quality; robustness measures the ability to survive typical modifications or attacks; capacity refers to the amount of information that can be embedded. Evaluation uses metrics such as perceptual quality (PSNR or structural similarity), bit error rate, and detection accuracy, alongside testing under various distortions.

Applications span copyright protection for images, audio, and video; content authentication and tamper detection; tracing and rights management; and broadcast or streaming scenarios where embedded marks help identify sources or distribution channels. Attacks to remove or degrade watermarks include compression, filtering, cropping, geometric transformations, and collusion. The field seeks to balance invisibility, security, and resilience while addressing legal, ethical, and privacy considerations in watermark use. Emerging areas include watermarking for 3D content, live streams, and machine-generated media.
