starttilamppujen, often referred to as starter lamps or starter bulbs, are a type of ignitor used in fluorescent lighting systems. They are typically small, cylindrical devices that contain a glow-discharge lamp and a bimetallic strip. Their primary function is to initiate the arc within the fluorescent tube, allowing it to produce light.

When power is applied to the fixture, the starter lamp's glow discharge heats the bimetallic strip. As the strip heats up, it bends and makes contact with another electrode inside the starter. This completes a circuit, causing current to flow through the ballast and the fluorescent tube. The ballast provides a high voltage surge at this moment, which is necessary to ignite the gas inside the fluorescent tube.

Once the fluorescent tube ignites and begins to conduct current, the glow discharge in the starter lamp ceases. The bimetallic strip cools, moves away from the electrode, and opens the circuit. The starter lamp then acts as a blocking element, preventing continuous current flow through itself and allowing the fluorescent tube to operate at its normal, lower current.

Starters are generally inexpensive and relatively simple components. They are commonly found in older or simpler fluorescent lighting fixtures. While effective, they can wear out over time and may need to be replaced if the fluorescent tube fails to start or flickers. Modern fluorescent ballasts sometimes incorporate electronic starting mechanisms that do not require a separate starter lamp.
