Startnummer refers to a numeric identifier assigned to participants in athletic competitions to identify them during the event. The term is commonly used in Dutch and German contexts, where it translates to "start number" and is understood in other languages as a race bib. A startnummer is typically a printed bib or sticker that is attached to the participant's clothing or equipment.

The primary purpose is to identify athletes for timing, scoring, and results. It also helps officials, volunteers, photographers, and spectators recognize competitors, link results to names, ages, clubs, and divisions, and support safety and crowd management. Many startnummer include a timing component, such as an RFID chip or a barcode, which records an athlete's time when passing control mats.

Numbers are usually issued during registration, often in sequential order or by category, age group, or wave start. There are rules about placement and visibility: in running events the number is typically worn on the chest with the digits facing outward; in other sports the positioning may vary. The design may also indicate the participant's category or team, and may contain sponsor logos.
