Standardmaking is the process by which groups create and maintain standards—documented agreements that establish uniform technical criteria, methods, or practices intended to ensure interoperability, safety, quality, and efficiency across products, services, and systems. Standards can be voluntary guidelines or mandatory requirements when adopted by law or regulation.

Standards cover many domains, including manufacturing, information technology, environmental management, and consumer protection. They may be international (global compatibility), regional, or national. They can be performance-based, allowing flexibility in how outcomes are met, or prescriptive, specifying exact materials, methods, or dimensions.

Governance: Most standardmaking is conducted by standards organizations through a consensus-driven process involving industry, government, academia, consumer groups, and the public. International bodies such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) coordinate worldwide standardization, often through technical committees. Regional and national bodies (for example, CEN/CENELEC in Europe, ANSI in the United States, DIN in Germany) adapt or adopt these standards. Drafts are created by technical committees and subjected to public comment and formal voting.

Process: A typical workflow includes proposing a new work item, scoping and planning, drafting by a committee, circulation for comment, revision, and formal approval and publication as a standard. Many standards undergo periodic revision to reflect new technology and feedback. Some standards become referenced in regulation or procurement contracts, giving them de facto mandatory status.

Impact and issues: Standardmaking aims to enable interoperability, safety, and fair competition while reducing costs and trade barriers. It can create value but may face criticisms for slowness, potential bias, or overreach. Ongoing efforts seek greater transparency, broader participation, and the promotion of open, interoperable standards.
