staalaluminium

Staalaluminium, or steel–aluminium, refers to bimetallic or laminated materials that combine steel and aluminium in a single component. These materials are produced to exploit the strength and stiffness of steel together with the light weight and corrosion resistance of aluminium. They are commonly manufactured as clad plates, laminated sheets, or sandwich panels, where the two metals are bonded through various joining and rolling techniques.

Common production methods include roll bonding to create clad plates, explosive bonding to fuse layers with high integrity, diffusion bonding for solid interfaces, and adhesive or mechanical bonding for assembled structures. The choice of method depends on required bond strength, thickness, and intended service conditions. Interfaces are critical design considerations, as differences in thermal expansion and potential galvanic corrosion can affect long-term performance.

Properties and performance: the aluminium layer provides corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity, while the steel layer contributes high tensile strength and stiffness. The combination can reduce weight relative to all-steel components and improve heat transfer in certain applications. However, dissimilar-metal interfaces may be vulnerable to galvanic corrosion in moist environments, and differential expansion can introduce interfacial stresses or delamination if not properly designed and protected.

Applications: steel–aluminium materials are used in heat exchangers, pressure vessels, automotive and aerospace components, shipbuilding, and architectural cladding. They are selected when a balance of strength, weight, and corrosion resistance is desired, and when the production process can accommodate bonding and long-term maintenance considerations.
